previous week back to index following week big red freight trains Erica has finished her medical degree. It was something she did on the side while more seriously pursuing architecture but in this system the degree is not truly finalised until you get a job as a doctor. Such horseshit. So she gets hired for a few weeks as a doctor to finish up the program in the university's eyes. Her sister is also a doctor, a practicing one, who apparently is a republican in the group that is doctors in support of Arnold's governorship. ick. I meet Erica's dad, who seem friendly, like Bill Behun. Trains are arriving from other countries or faraway states, and I'm at a junction station where people are changing trains. The bridges to cross the tracks are impossibly high (50 feet or more) and have really steep stairways. It is more like an escalator or drag-along ski lift, where you desperately hold onto the handrail and hope you don't tumble all the way down before reaching the top. The trains come rolling in. They look like San Diego Trolleys in that they are red but they are huge and wide and tall and powerful like freight trains. dan's plan dan stenger's got a plan, a new business plan for our little store. his tall wife comes by with their baby and he talks about how we're going to have a theme and sell candy but only the right types and have some rules of discipline and i think to myself that we're never going to make any money selling loose pretzels (although they taste wonderfully like ginger) and a few basic items. we need to diversify and have small candy like life savers and breath mints. i personally never buy that stuff but someone will. --- --- --- --- misc Jens calls while I'm on the phone with Erica's mom. Pam is calling to ask me questions about Greg Miller, who, since he is working half-time now, has been spending time with Chida. Driving through Los Angeles I see Korean flags up on a big building and tell Chida about it. Mike Nieto and I are in a train station, waiting for our departure to Kansas City. --- --- --- --- |
