This piece of wood dristributes the force of the port shrouds (which hold the mast up) along the underside of the deck. It was rotting through, and the center shroud was threatening to pull through the deck.

So, we first dug out all the rotten wood... *

...and replaced it with a modified piece of driftwood that Jim found on a tiny deserted island. It fit perfectly. *

...allowing us to tighten the shrouds with confidence and seal the gaps with silicone caulk. *
