phase two: NEVADA
JUNE 23rd:
To all - Joshua phoned tonight - he's in a town (he thinks) is named simply "Border" on Route 50, seven miles from the border of Nevada and Utah. He was "blown off course" slightly by an unseasonal ("and damn cold") rainstorm, which forced him to find shelter at the first available motel. He expects to reach Milford tomorrow and will find a computer and give us a first-person account of his ordeal when he reaches Cedar City in a couple days.
JUNE 21st:
From Pam (Josh's mommy):
"Joshua phoned tonight and asked that I send an update. He's reached Eureka (!) Nevada on Day 8. Things are going well - he say's he's fortunate in that the weather has been cool (70 or so) during the daylight hours, but, as he discovered while camping last night, the temperature drops to the 50's at night. He says the high desert is beautiful - he's alternately riding through basins filled with scrub and mountain ranges with deciduous trees. He asks that you have patience in that he won't have reached civilization (defined, as nearly as I can tell, by Joshua as "a place with computers") for 4 or 5 days at which point he'll check in."

JUNE 19th:
"Hey everybody. I know I told you I wouldn't write for a while, but I found a public library here in Fallon, NV, with internet access, so I figured I'd send out a quick "all is groovy".

"I took a day off yesterday to recover in Carson City, and I feel a heck of a lot better now. The weather has cooled down slightly, from 100+ yesterday to the mid-80's, quite pleasant for flatland cycling, but still a little hot for climbing. Today was a quick 62 miles into Fallon, the last town with more than 10,000 people until maybe Cedar City, Utah (and I'm not even sure about that -- don't have my maps with me at the moment). Like today, tomorrow will be mostly flat and easy riding. After that, it's roller coaster mountains all the way to Colorado, where there are more mountains, of course. The desert is pretty, carpeted with mellow-green sagebrush in dark brown or tan soil. Towns are up to 80+ miles apart from here on out, so I will have to plan acquisition of food and water carefully. I should be able to hit one town per day.
"Anyway, that's about all I have to say for now. I hope everything is well with all of you. It will take me at least a week to reach Cedar City, and I doubt that I'll be able to send out another message before then."
