DAO SON
- Run by a mother and her two friendly sons (Eric and T. Tao), Dao Son will
serve up Vietnamese and Japanese dishes that will knock your socks off.
The portions and prices will also delight you; $5.99 buys you an incredible
dinner and leftovers for lunch.
Our favorites: Fried Spring Rolls, Tasty Red Fish, Tofu with
Spice Sauce (order the tofu fried for a special treat), Shrimp with Lemongrass,
Chicken Sate, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and Japanese Eggplant with Tofu and
Lemongrass.
THE PIRATE'S DEN - Hands down, our
favorite bar in San Diego. We are baffled with every visit at how
unnoticed this place has gone in its two years of business. Okay, the
location is mysterious but you must check it out!
The decor is fascinating... stylish and modern. Bizarre oil
paintings on the wall, psychedelic lighting and arty films projected on the
wall. Pool table in the back, and best of all, live DJs every night
they are open. Our favorite night used to be Thursdays, when the owner
himself played flute alongside downbeat electronica (not sure when that happens
now).
The place is never packed (which we also love) and the crowd is
interesting, intelligent, and extremely friendly. Good vibes all around.
They don't have a full liquor license but if you tire of beer and wine try their
delicious unique sake drinks. If you're looking to get wasted on alcohol, you're
better off in the Gaslamp or PB anyway.
2812 Kettner, a few blocks north of the Casbah. Next door
to half a city block of electrical chaos; look for the red neon X over the door
which is your only clue.
